Sensitivity and downstream influence of the impinging leading-edge vortex instability in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve

چکیده
Bileaflet mechanical heart valves (BMHV) create unphysiological turbulent flow. Such flow involves multiple instability mechanisms interacting with one another in a confined geometry. For instance, an impinging leading-edge vortex (ILEV) creates disturbances at the leading edge of valve leaflets, while potentially promoting turbulence downstream BMHV (Zolfaghari and Obrist, Phys. Rev. Fluids , vol. 4, 2019). In this article, we use adjoint-based methods to study structural sensitivity ILEV BMHV, quantify role maximum disturbance energy growth wake BMHV. We first present direct numerical simulation show effect on valve. Second, perform modal linear stability analysis two-dimensional subdomain attached leaflet. investigate global modes associated using their adjoints, then passive control scenario local feedback source. This results partial improvement oscillations leaflets. finally non-modal approach identify optimal initial conditions for achieving arbitrary locations. that, sufficiently large times, condition highest points edge, which includes instability. Our illustrates that improved shape can effectively reduce

Experimental investigation of flow through a bileaflet mechanical heart valve
Turbulent flow downstream of a bileaflet mechanical heart valve is investigated using digital particle image velocimetry. Evolution of flow structures during the systole and diastole phases of a typical cardiac cycle is characterized by obtaining global flow velocity measurements in multiple cross-sections of the flow field. Instantaneous and time-averaged patterns of flow velocity, vorticity, ...
متن کاملThrombogenic performance of a st. Jude bileaflet mechanical heart valve in a sheep model.
The sheep model is preferred for chronic evaluation of prosthetic heart valves, surgical techniques, and endocardiographic studies. A bileaflet mechanical heart valve (MHV) was implanted into a sheep model to study its in vivo performance and to evaluate the thrombogenic potential of the valve. Transesophageal echocardiography and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography measurements were conducted...

since the 1960s the age effects on learning both first and second language have been explored by many linguists and applied linguists (e.g lennerberg, 1967; schachter, 1996; long, 1990) and the existence of critical period for language acquisition was found to be a common ground of all these studies. in spite of some common findings, some issues about the impacts of age on acquiring a second or...

OBJECTIVE Mechanical heart valves can cause thromboembolic complications, possibly due to abnormal flow patterns that produce turbulence downstream of the valve. The objective of this study was to investigate whether three different bileaflet valve designs would exhibit clinically relevant differences in downstream turbulent stresses. METHODS Three bileaflet mechanical heart valves (Medtronic...
متن کاملLeaflet Escape in a New Bileaflet Mechanical Valve
Background—Leaflet escape is a mode of structural valve failure for mechanical prostheses. This complication previously has been reported for both monoleaflet and bileaflet valve models. We report 2 leaflet escape occurrences observed in 2 patients who underwent valve replacement with a TRI Technologies valve prosthesis. Methods and Results—At the University of Padua, between November 2000 and ...
